Rise in death rate linked to Covid fears at hospitals

Description

A study by the University of Hong Kong's faculty of medicine found that emergency ward attendance dropped by 27% during the first three local waves of Covid, leading to a 45% increase in the city's death rate. The decrease in attendance is attributed to the public's fear of contracting Covid at hospitals and not wanting to overburden the medical system. The rise in death rate was observed in patients with various illnesses, particularly among elderly and chronically ill patients.
