HKUMed identifies an additional cost-effective drug option for sedating patients with acute agitation in the emergency department

Abstract

Researchers from the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy of the LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong found intramuscular olanzapine to be a cost-effective drug for treating acute agitation in Accident and Emergency departments in Hong Kong. Compared to haloperidol, olanzapine is similarly cost-effective and has a more benign cardiovascular profile, with fewer movement disorder side effects. The research team conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing olanzapine, midazolam, and haloperidol for emergency use.
