HKUMed finds a drop in public emergency department attendance associated with increased mortality during COVID-19 pandemic;
encourages patients in need to seek emergency care
Abstract
A research team from The University of Hong Kong found a significant drop in emergency department visits and an increase in certified deaths during the first eight months of the COVID-19 pandemic at 18 public acute hospitals. The team encourages patients to seek emergency care promptly and calls on the government and related parties to deliver updated health messages and adjust healthcare services. The study has implications for governments to identify and support at-risk populations during the pandemic, such as through telephone advisory centers or online consultation systems.
