HKU State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases discovers
Novel Coronavirus Mutant at early phase of pandemic
with characteristics of attenuated vaccine
Abstract
Researchers from the University of Hong Kong found that the early SARS-CoV-2 virus quickly loses its basic amino acid motif in spike protein during human cell culture. This does not affect the virus replication in human cells, but the mutant strain is non-pathogenic to hamsters and can induce immunity against the wild-type virus. This non-pathogenic mutant strain has the potential to become an attenuated vaccine.
